Group Project Reflection - Daniel Gallardo

This project was very enjoyable, although it was not easy I loved how much we learned and the real world impacts we were making through the civic action score card. During my time doing the civic action score card I learned about the many different ways we can help our communities. During my events I helped feed the homeless, became a teachers aid, and helped out in my local community service event. I learned that the combined efforts of many people can make massive improvements to communities. During the project my team and I learned how to communicate and manage deadlines. During this post I was give me reflection on all the other presentations and my own, as well as what I learned from them. In our project I had to do research and talk about how immigrants shape schools, culture and neighborhoods. It forced me to look at current day events and form my own opinion on the topic. In my presentation as a whole we have to show how immigration helps society. I think that my group did a great job and we used good visuals, statistics, and sources to come up with a presentation that was able to explain and show what we needed it to.

The first group that had to present was group 3. In their presentation they talked about family involvement in education and civic action programs in the U.S and globally. I felt that group 3 did a great job in making their presentation relatable and adding a lot of global perspectives. They included countries like Finland and how they treated education like a communal responsibility. They also talked about the many challenges that families face including language barriers, busy schedules, and the lack of resources that many families seem to have. Group 3 also went into depth on the different education programs such as homeschooling and government programs that have been shown to work and the parent involvement. There were also many moments in the presentation that stood out to me. The first is the Live interview wth Ricardos mom. I really liked this interview because it showed the issue in the perspective of a math teacher that knows first hand how parental involvement can help. The TED talk was another interesting point as it helped provide evidence on how adults can support a child's education. Group 3 also had a brochure which I thought was very good as it showcased programs that connected school and families making the presentation in my opinion interactive and fun.

Group 2 talked about the relationship between healthcare and access to immigration specifically about the equity issues. They talked about how immigrants contribute to taxes and have jobs but they often lack the access to healthcare that they need. They also showed historical context as well as showing the global scale of the issue. They showed how this is a problem not only present in the U.S but in the rest of the world. Some good parts of the presentation was the interview that they had with Patricia Lopez, in this interview they were able to expose misconceptions and fears that are related to Obamacare. They also ended in a quote showing the healthcare is a basic human right, this showed the importance of the topic to the reader.  What I also liked about group 2 was the personal stories that they included. For example the healthcare struggle that many went through during Covid-19. They presentation also used visuals to explain the influence of immigrant status and its influence of programs such as Medicaid.

Group 4 was the third group to present. Their topic was how environmental policies, public safety, and economic conditions are interconnected. Group 4 went in depth with environmental regulations and how it can dramatically shift depending on government priorities. They also went in depth with global perspectives, where they compared environmental laws in different countries to show how sustainability in approached differently. During the presentation they discussed crime rates and the role of the federal government. Specifically they went in depth on factors that influence environmental protection laws. Including the economy and government priorities. My favorite part of their presentation was the interview and videos that they played. This included the interview with Giovanni a criminal justice student. I felt that it was nice to get the opinion of the topic from a criminal justc student about the topic that we were discussing it made it feel professional. The TED talk was also very good as it emphasized public saftey and community engagement. The conclusion to the presentation was also very good and provided a quote which helped sum up their research.

The last group to present was my group and my topic was immigration and its effect on society economey and how it changed globally. During my presentation we talked about the factors that cause people to migrate including economic challenges, instability or climate change. We also talked about the cultural and social impact that immigration has on out communities including schools and neighborhoods. Personally I talked about the culture change that it brings and the challenges that many immigrants face due to not having their language spoken or culture celebrated. I then mention however how essential diversity is and how in the end it benefits everyone as a whole. We then do a comparative analysis of global immigration as a whole. My favorite parts were the live data and examples as well as Carolinas quote that she mentioned.

In conclusion I felt that every group was creative and visual and in the end they all did well. I  felt that every point was explained thoroughly and they did a good job of showing how these issues affect real people. Each group also showed real world examples including interviews and data which proved their points and importance. In the end I learned a little bit from each group and have information that I am now able to use in my every day life. It also made me interested and made me want to go and learn more. It also showed me how to engage in my community and consider issues in society that I should acknowledge and try to solve.
